Choosing the Right Cage

Despite what pet stores suggest, most commercial cages are too small. Aim for at least 450 square inches of continuous floor space. Bin cages and tank setups often provide better living conditions.

Diet and Nutrition

A balanced hamster diet includes a quality seed mix or lab blocks, supplemented with fresh vegetables, occasional fruits, and protein sources like mealworms or boiled egg.

Exercise and Enrichment

A wheel is essential — at least 8 inches for dwarf hamsters and 10-12 inches for Syrians. Add tunnels, chew toys, and foraging opportunities to keep them mentally stimulated.

Handling Tips

Hamsters need time to adjust to their new home. Wait at least a week before attempting to handle them, and always approach slowly with a treat in hand.

Patience pays off

Taming a hamster can take 1-2 weeks. Let them come to you on their terms, and always wash your hands before handling to avoid food scents that may trigger a bite.
